What is your relationship with money? Your relationship with money reveals patterns and mindsets that shape your financial reality. It’s a question that directly impacts how you mind it, make it, and move it. For many of us, our earliest lessons about money were shaped by family experiences—and often those lessons weren’t healthy.

Growing up, I saw my mother "double-up" on bills. She’d agree to make two payments after skipping a couple of months, hoping to catch up. But more often than not, the plan would fall apart, leaving us further behind and more stressed. It was survival mode, a cycle of short-term solutions and long-term struggle. I didn’t realize at the time how deeply this pattern would affect my own financial journey.

Fast forward to adulthood, and I achieved a significant milestone—as a first-time homebuyer, I bought my first home at 22. On the outside, it looked like I was doing well. But behind the scenes, I was house rich and cash poor. My expenses outpaced my income, and I quickly found myself repeating the same payment-plan mentality. I was making commitments I couldn’t keep, with creditors constantly calling for their payments. I was stressed, spiritually depleted, and stuck in a cycle that felt impossible to break.

But God had a different plan for me.

A Faith-Led Revelation

I reached a point where I knew something had to change. I turned to God for wisdom and guidance. During this revelatory time, I learned that prayer was not just about meeting my financial obligations; it was about transforming my mindset. God elevated my thinking, showing me that to live the abundant life I desired, I needed a new financial strategy built on faith and action.

James 2:17 says, "Faith without works is dead." My faith led to action. I began reducing my expenses and focusing on increasing my revenue. I meticulously tracked where my money was going and created a plan to split my resources between savings and debt repayment. Instead of just surviving, I started thriving. My savings were reinvested to generate more income, and I embraced the need to make more than my paycheck afforded me.

Today, by the grace of God, I am financially free. I am a multi-millionaire with passive and residual income streams, actively building legacy and generational wealth. My family isn’t just surviving—we’re thriving. We live where we want, buy what we want, and serve how we are called to serve. And here’s the best part: God has no respect of persons. If He did it for me, He can do it for you.

Understanding Your Early Money Lessons

Take a moment to reflect on the financial lessons you learned growing up. Did your family model wealth-building behaviors or survival tactics? Were you taught to manage money wisely or to simply make ends meet? For many of us, generational financial trauma has left deep scars.

The financial habits I witnessed as a child influenced how I handled money as an adult. I had to unlearn unhealthy behaviors and reprogram my mindset. This process wasn’t easy, but it was necessary to break free from the cycle of debt and stress.

If you’re struggling financially, know that you’re not alone. The first step to change is awareness. Identify the patterns you’ve inherited and commit to doing things differently.

The Challenges of Being House Rich but Cash Poor

Owning a home is often seen as a symbol of success, but for many, it can become a financial burden. I experienced this firsthand. I thought buying a house at a young age meant I had “made it.” But without proper financial planning, I quickly found myself overwhelmed by expenses.

Mortgage payments, maintenance costs, and utilities added up. I was putting out financial fires with temporary fixes—payment plans, borrowing from one bill to pay another. The stress was relentless. I was physically and emotionally drained, and it impacted every area of my life.

This is a reality for many people today. They own assets that look impressive on the surface but lack the cash flow to sustain them. Breaking free from this cycle requires a mindset shift and a strategic financial plan.

Transforming Your Mindset Through Faith

For me, the turning point came when I sought God’s wisdom. I prayed not just for relief from my financial struggles, but for a complete transformation. God showed me that abundance was His plan for my life. I didn’t need to be enslaved to debt; I was created to live in financial freedom.

Faith gave me the courage to take action. I began by tracking every dollar I spent. I analyzed my spending habits, identified areas to cut back, and redirected those savings toward debt repayment and investments. I learned to be a good steward of my resources, and God honored that by increasing my opportunities and income streams.

Proverbs 13:22 says, "A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children." This became my guiding principle. I realized that building generational wealth wasn’t just about me; it was about creating a legacy for my family.

Achieving Financial Freedom and Building Legacy

Financial freedom means having control over your money instead of being controlled by it. It’s about having the resources to live life on your terms, without constant stress about bills and debt. Today, I’m blessed to experience this freedom, but it’s not just for me. I believe we are all called to live in abundance.

Generational wealth involves creating assets and opportunities that benefit not only you but future generations. It’s about breaking the cycle of poverty and building a foundation of financial stability for your family. By making intentional choices today, you can create a legacy that lasts.
